BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Little Elm Owner’s Guide
BFT keypad and intercom repair in Little Elm typically runs $185 to $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad face, the intercom module, or the full communication board. We stock BFT-compatible keypads and intercom parts on our trucks, so most jobs are completed the same day we arrive. Most owners discover the failure the hard way: the keypad stops accepting the code, the intercom goes silent on one end, or the gate opens fine from the remote but won’t respond at the pedestal at all. When that happens, you’re not locked out of just a gate, you’re locked out of your own routine. We fix it right the first time, or we come back and fix it right.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
This repair guide covers the BFT keypad and intercom lines most common in Little Elm driveways: the MITTO series keypads (MITTO 2, MITTO 4), the QKS and KP series, and the BFT RIGEL and THALIA intercom and control units paired with those keypads. If you have an older BFT DEIMOS or SUB control board running a wired intercom, the part matching changes meaningfully, so don’t guess on a model number. Vic, our owner, will tell you straight: the label on the back of the keypad or the inside of the intercom enclosure is where the truth lives. Write down everything on that label before you call.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question for BFT specifically, our position is plain. BFT’s OEM keypads use a specific ribbon-cable pinout and weather-seal geometry that many generic aftermarket units simply do not replicate. A cheap clone keypad will sometimes work for a summer, then fail the first time a Texas thunderstorm drives rain sideways into the pedestal. We carry OEM BFT parts and a short list of aftermarket equivalents we’ve actually tested on BFT control boards. If we won’t put a part on your gate, we’ll tell you why.
Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Is Failing
- Keypad accepts the code but the gate hesitates or does nothing. This usually points to a failing relay on the BFT control board, not the keypad itself. The keypad is talking, the board isn’t listening. We see this most often on BFT boards older than eight years.
- Intercom audio works one direction only. The visitor can hear you, but you can’t hear them, or the reverse. That’s typically a dead microphone or speaker driver on the intercom module. Humidity inside the pedestal accelerates this, and Little Elm’s summer moisture gets into poorly sealed enclosures fast.
- Keypad backlight dead but buttons still function. A failed LED driver or a cracked faceplate letting water in. The buttons still send signal until corrosion reaches the contacts. You have a window before it’s fully dead, and it’s cheaper to fix in that window.
- Phantom calls from the intercom or random gate cycling. Water intrusion across the keypad contacts or a failing communication wire between the pedestal and the control board. This is the one that makes homeowners think the gate is haunted. It’s not, it’s moisture.
- Code works sometimes, not others. Intermittent behavior almost always traces back to a cold solder joint on the keypad board or a pinched wire where the conduit enters the pedestal. Temperature swings make it come and go. Little Elm’s freeze-to-thaw winter cycles are hard on pedestal wiring.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we quote in Little Elm, and the number we agree on before we turn a single screw is the number on your bill.
- Keypad face or module replacement (MITTO, QKS, KP): $185 to $295 installed
- Full keypad replacement with new weather seal and mounting hardware: $260 to $340 installed
- Intercom module replacement (RIGEL, THALIA): $220 to $420 installed depending on whether it’s audio-only or video-capable
- Control board relay repair (when the keypad is fine but the gate won’t respond): $150 to $280 installed
The range depends on what actually failed. We don’t quote a keypad over the phone if the intercom is also intermittent, because we’d be guessing, and guessing costs you money. Every replacement includes the part, labor, weather sealing, and our written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we come back. No paperwork, no arguing, no exceptions.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do yourself: check whether the keypad has power by looking for the backlight, confirm the breakers are on, and visually inspect for obvious cracks or water in the pedestal. That’s the extent of it. Beyond that, this is where DIY goes wrong. BFT keypads and intercoms run on low-voltage DC, but the gate controller itself ties into line voltage and a moving gate leaf. Opening a pedestal without understanding what’s live and what’s low voltage is how people get hurt. Add a moving gate into that equation and it’s not worth the risk.
If you’ve already got the pedestal open or the keypad off the wall, close it back up and call us at (432) 547-6481. We’ll match the part, quote the job, and have it done right, usually the same day.
FAQs
In our Little Elm service area, a BFT keypad installed with a proper weather seal typically lasts six to ten years before the buttons or the faceplate start failing. Intercom modules run closer to five to eight years, because the speaker and microphone components degrade faster in our humidity. Direct sun exposure on an unshaded pedestal shortens both.
If yours is past that window and acting up, don’t sink money into repeat patch jobs. Call (432) 547-6481 for a straight answer on whether to repair or replace.
Depends on what failed. If the issue is a corroded contact or a loose wire, yes, we can often repair it on the spot. If the faceplate is cracked, buttons are worn through, or water reached the circuit board, repair becomes a false economy, and we’ll tell you that plainly. We don’t sell parts you don’t need.
Call (432) 547-6481 and describe exactly what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s worth a service call.
Most BFT keypad and intercom swaps in Little Elm take 45 minutes to 90 minutes once we’re on site, assuming the wiring from the pedestal to the control board is intact. If the wire run has been compromised, we’ll quote the repair before any work starts. We book same-day appointments for most repair calls.
We stock BFT-compatible keypads, intercom modules, weather seals, and the common control board relays on our trucks. For unusual or older BFT series parts, we can typically have them within a few business days. We also keep parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems, so if you’ve got a mixed driveway, we’re equipped for it.
Call (432) 547-6481 and tell us the model number off your current keypad. We’ll confirm whether it’s on the truck before we head your way.
