BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Little Elm Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible welding and fabrication parts for Little Elm homeowners, with most gate frame repairs and bracket replacements completed in a single visit. Installed pricing typically runs $225 to $680 depending on the part, the weld location, and whether we’re repairing the existing piece or fabricating a replacement from scratch. Most owners discover the problem the same way: the gate starts dragging on one corner, or a hinge mount tears loose and the whole gate sags toward the latch post. By the time you see it, the metal has usually been failing quietly for months.

Here’s the thing about BFT gates in North Texas: the automation is solid, but the steel around it takes a beating. Clay soil shifts, gates get caught by wind, and powder coating eventually gives way to the humidity. We see the same failure points on BFT installations year after year across Little Elm, Oak Point, and Frisco. The good news is that most of it is repairable with proper welding, and we handle the fabrication work right here rather than sending it out.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT welding and fabrication work applies across their full residential lineup: the Deimos and Phobos swing gate operators, the Rigel and Sub series, and the older Thalia and Kustos models that are still running on plenty of Little Elm properties. The operator itself rarely needs welding. What fails is the steel around it: hinge brackets, mounting plates, gate frames, and the reinforcement gussets that tie everything together.

When we order or fabricate a part for a BFT gate, the first thing we check is the gate’s weight and the mounting configuration, not just the model number. A Deimos on a 14-foot iron gate loads its hinges completely differently than a Rigel on an 8-foot tube steel gate. That’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: BFT publishes different mounting kits for different gate weights, and using a lightweight bracket on a heavy gate is exactly how you end up with torn welds and a gate sitting on the ground. If you can read the model plate on your operator, that helps. If you can’t, we match the part by measuring the gate leaf, the hinge centers, and the steel thickness on site.

On OEM versus aftermarket: BFT’s factory brackets are fine, but for anything structural we often fabricate the replacement in our shop. A heavier-gauge steel bracket with a proper gusset will outlast the original, and we can match the hole pattern exactly. For cosmetic or non-structural parts, OEM is the simpler call and we keep the common ones in stock. We’re an independent service provider, not a BFT dealer, which means we’re free to recommend the part that actually makes sense for your gate rather than whatever carries the logo.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate sags or scrapes at the latch end. This is the classic symptom of a failing hinge weld. The top hinge carries most of the tension, and once that weld starts to fatigue, the gate leans away from the post and drags at the latch. A scrape mark on the concrete next to the latch post is usually the tell.
  • The gate shudders or jerks when the BFT operator moves it. If the mounting plate has cracked loose at one corner, the operator will push against the gate unevenly, and that shimmy gets worse every cycle until the weld fails completely.
  • You can see rust-colored staining at any weld or bracket joint. That stain means moisture has gotten under the coating and is working at the steel. Around Little Elm, the morning humidity and the occasional ice event make this worse. A bracket that looks “just surface rusted” is often thinner than you think underneath.
  • The gate moves but makes a metallic creak or groan at one specific spot. That’s metal flexing against metal at a cracked weld or a loose bracket. It will not heal itself. The crack propagates, and the next failure tends to be sudden rather than gradual.
  • A hinge bolt or mounting bolt keeps loosening no matter how many times you tighten it. When the metal around the bolt hole has wallowed out, the bolt is no longer doing the work. We drill and sleeve the hole, or weld in a new mounting point, rather than watching the same bolt back out again in two weeks.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Little Elm, plan on $225 to $320 for a straightforward hinge replacement with welding, including the parts and the labor to realign the gate. Cracked mounting brackets run $180 to $260 depending on accessibility and whether we need to remove the operator. Full fabrication work, like rebuilding a rusted gate frame section or fabricating custom hinge plates for an oversized gate, runs $380 to $680. A complete gate frame rebuild is quoted case by case, and we’ll walk the gate with you before we ever put a number on paper.

Every quote is settled before we strike an arc. You will know the full installed price before any work starts, and that number does not move unless we find something structural that was genuinely invisible during the initial walk, which we stop and discuss before proceeding. The labor and the fabrication are covered under our 90-Day Done Right Promise, written and simple. If it’s not right, we come back and fix it. That’s been the standard since 1984 and it has not changed.

Mounting bracket or gusset repair $180 – $260

DIY or Call Us?

There are two honest answers here. What you can safely do yourself: tighten hinge bolts, check for visible cracks in the welds and mounting plates, and watch the gate cycle a few times to see where it’s binding or flexing. That inspection helps us both, and I’ll always ask what you saw before I start. What you should not do yourself: welding repairs on a gate that is under any tension at all, or any repair that involves holding a gate upright while you work on its hinges. A 400-pound gate with a broken hinge is a genuine hazard. The spring and tension loads in swing and slide gates have injured plenty of well-intentioned people, and we would rather you keep your fingers.

If the gate is still standing but creaking, give us a call before it drops. We’ll come look at it, tell you exactly what it needs, and give you a written price. Call (432) 547-6481 and a real person answers, any hour, any day.
