Elite Access Control Installation: The Little Elm Owner’s Guide

An Elite access control installation in Little Elm typically runs $900 to $2,400 installed, depending on the reader, keypad, and wiring scope. Ironworks Gate Co. stocks Elite-compatible control boards, keypads, and receivers on our trucks, and most access control installs are completed same-day. The usual story we hear starts the same way: the gate opens fine with the remote, then one afternoon the keypad goes dead, or the gate stops reading the card reader at dusk, or the intercom just hums and nobody can hear a thing.

Access control parts fail a little differently than opener motors. They die quietly, usually after a storm or a power surge or simply years of North Texas heat cooking the circuit board inside its housing. One day the code works, the next day it doesn’t. If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

This guide covers Elite SL-3000, MiMo, and Legacy series gate openers, plus the Elite PR-1 and PR-2 receiver cards that pair with them. The access control side of an Elite gate is not one part; it’s a system: the keypad or card reader outside, the antenna and receiver inside the opener cabinet, and the control board that ties them together. When an owner calls us about “the access control,” the failed part is usually one of those three.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Little Elm homeowners: Elite keypads and receivers are frequency-matched to the opener’s generation. The older 318 MHz systems do not talk to the newer 433 MHz boards, even if the wiring harness plugs look identical. You cannot tell by the wire colors. You have to check the FCC label inside the opener cover, or match the part number stamped on the old keypad. Victor Salinas checks both before any part leaves the truck.

On OEM versus aftermarket: for Elite boards and receivers, we recommend OEM parts every time. Aftermarket boards exist, but the ones we have pulled back out of gates fail within a season or two in Texas heat. For keypads and exterior readers, a quality aftermarket weatherproof unit is often the better call, because the OEM plastic housings crack in direct sun after a few summers. We’ll show you both options and the price difference before you decide.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts the code but the gate won’t move. The keypad is talking, but the receiver or control board isn’t passing the signal through. In Little Elm, this often happens after a lightning strike nearby, even a mild one. The surge takes out the receiver relay first.
  • Keypad lights up, but some of the buttons don’t respond. That’s a worn keypad membrane, usually from years of sun and rain. The circuit board underneath is often fine, but the outer keypad face is no longer sealing or making contact. We replace the keypad, not just the buttons.
  • Gate opens on its own, usually at dawn or dusk. This is a failing photo-eye or safety edge connection on the access control board, not a ghost. The board reads the sensor as “open” when the temperature shifts. It’s common on Elite boards more than six or seven years old.
  • Card reader beeps but won’t release the gate. On Elite systems, the reader and the opener need to share the same Wiegand protocol setting. If the board’s memory has reset or the reader’s wiring has pulled loose at the terminal block, you get the beep with no action. It’s a ten-minute board programming fix for us, but it requires the Elite programming sequence that isn’t in the homeowner manual.
  • Intercom buzzes constantly and the audio is garbled. On Elite telephone-entry systems, this usually points to a failing power supply capacitor or a corroding ground wire inside the keypad post. Little Elm’s humidity and the occasional hard freeze work on those connections over time.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Access control installation in Little Elm is priced by the part and the wiring scope, not by the hour. A keypad replacement typically lands between $250 and $450 installed. A receiver or antenna swap runs $300 to $500. A full control board replacement is usually $600 to $950. If you need the complete system, keypad, receiver, and board, plan on $1,200 to $2,400 depending on the Elite model and how much of the old wiring we have to pull and replace.

Every quote includes the part, the labor, any new wiring or connectors, and clean programming of codes and cards before we leave. The price is agreed before any work starts, in writing. Nothing gets added at the end. The work itself is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we come back and make it right, no paperwork, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things an owner can safely do. First, check the breaker and the keypad’s battery if it’s a battery-powered keypad. Second, look at the wiring inside the keypad housing for obvious green corrosion or a loose wire that has pulled free. Beyond that, access control work gets into live low-voltage wiring and mains power inside the opener cabinet.

We have seen owners attempt a board swap with the power still live and short the whole opener. We have seen aftermarket keypads wired backward that fried an otherwise good Elite board. On access control, the expensive mistakes happen fast and quietly. If you want to try the diagnosis yourself, we’ll talk you through it on the phone. If it turns into a repair, we’ll be out the same day in most Little Elm neighborhoods, with the right part already on the truck. Call (432) 547-6481 and tell us what your keypad or reader is doing. We’ll tell you straight what it needs.
